The Peenestrom
The 20 km long estuary of the Baltic Sea connects the Szczecin Lagoon with the open Baltic Sea and creates a charming landscape characterized by bays, which invites you to explore.
Several bulges such as the Achterwasser, Spandowerhagener Wiek and Krumminer Wiek characterize the appearance of the special flowing water. The stream got its name from the river Peene, which flows near Anklam. With increased wind speed, water masses from the Baltic Sea are pushed into the Stettiner Haff from time to time. This causes strong currents to occur at times in the Peenestrom. All water sports enthusiasts should be prepared for rough weather.
Many different small marinas like Freest, Kröslin, Peenemünde and Wolgast make the Peenestrom a popular sailing area. Until the end of 2009, the Peenestrom was deepened to 7.50 m as a sea waterway. This made it possible for ships with heavy loads to pass through. The Peene River is also home to many species of birds and fish. The great abundance of fish means that the stream has become a preferred habitat for water birds such as white-tailed eagles, herons and cormorants.
