In the past, it served as a trade route to the Baltic Sea. Today, the Recknitz Valley is a protected landscape area that you can explore on a leisurely canoe or raft tour. The 88,9 km long river rises north of Teterow and flows into the Saaler Bodden near Ribnitz-Damgarten. In 1250 the Recknitz was mentioned in a document for the first time. Today's name was derived from the Slavic word rêka (=river). From Tessin it is possible to canoe the Recknitz all year round.

In some places the Recknitz reaches depths of up to 4 meters, but for the most part it flows leisurely along unspoiled, green river banks. In the course of many renaturation works, which made the area more scenic, in some places of the Recknitz a marsh and reed wilderness will grow out of the planned bird sanctuary.
