Wartislaw Gedächniskirche

The neo-Gothic Wartislaw Church in Stolpe was built in honor of Wartislaw I, the first Pomeranian prince to convert to Christianity. It was built of bricks and is characterized by a ribbed vault inside the church.

Already around the middle of the 12th century Ratibor I donated a church for his brother Wartislaw, who is said to have been murdered in the area of Stolpe. Its location, however, could not be localized so far. It probably belonged to the Stolpe monastery founded in 1153.
After the destruction of the monastery buildings in 1637 during the Thirty Years' War, a chapel built next to the ruins of the monastery church served as a place of worship for the Protestant community of Stolpe until the end of the 19th century.
Between 1891 and 1893 the present church was built by order of Count von Kanitz-Schmuggerow according to the plans of the Berlin architect Theodor Prüfer. In 1994/95 the building was renovated.
