SEA MUSEUM Stralsund

The MEERESMUSEUM in Stralsund's old town is currently closed. The museum is expected to open in 2024 after extensive modernization work.

It becomes MEER! Modernization of the MEERESMUSEUM

The MEERESMUSEUM in Stralsund's old town has had its home in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen since 1951. It is the oldest of four locations of the German Oceanographic Museum Foundation. The building is closed until 2024 for extensive modernization.

Plans include a redesigned entrance area, floor-to-ceiling display cases and faithful installations of marine animals in the exhibitions, as well as an impressive large aquarium with a reef. The aquariums in the historic vaulted cellar of the monastery complex will be completely redesigned so that visitors can once again embark on a journey through the warm seas. Particularly popular exhibits such as the leatherback turtle "Marlene" and the famous fin whale skeleton will still be on display after the modernization. Sea turtles can still be seen swimming and feeding in their 350,000-liter aquarium. An important point in the redesign of the exhibitions is accessibility.
