Crane Hotel and Museum in Hessenburg Manor House

The manor house in Hessenburg is all about the crane. Around Hessenburg, these ambassadors of happiness rest in large flocks in spring and autumn. The manor house itself houses the registry office for the rural area of the town of Barth, the crane museum and the crane hotel with charming apartments.

The Crane Museum & Crane Hotel responds to the unique context of the site. The Hessenburg Manor is nestled in the fields of northern Western Pomerania and these serve as a resting place for many hundreds of cranes in spring and autumn on their flights from Sweden to Spain. The manor house, built around 1840, offers its visitors equal opportunity to linger. They can encounter an ever-growing collection of contemporary art, which itself is created in correspondence with this place. Whether visitors stay for an afternoon or a week, they will have a truly memorable experience in the spaces that Alex Schweder, an internationally renowned artist, has designed to tell the traces of their many stories.

The Museum
TheCrane Museum sees its mission as commissioning and collecting contemporary works of art that take their cue from the house, the surrounding landscape, and their inherent stories. It opened in the fall of 2011 under the curatorship of Alex Schweder and Khadija Zinnenburg Carroll. In 2015, it welcomes new curator Zsuzsanna Stanitz, currently a Fellow of the Fondazione Sandretto re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy.
Crane Museum hours: 4/1 - 10/31, Sat. - Sun. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Crane HotelInspring 2015, the Crane Hotel was opened with a total of 6 apartments, to which was attached the Garden House, with space for up to 6 people. They are 30 to 60sqm in size and were individually and artistically designed by Alex Schweder, New York. In 2019, 2 artist studios were completed in the attic, each equipped with a small kitchen.

In total, the manor house now houses 8 apartments of different sizes.
The concept of this hotel offers our guests the rare experience of staying in a museum. They can have an in-depth look at the works of internationally recognized artists. Designed as a place of deceleration and contemplation, here you can take long walks along the Bodden and Baltic beaches and, returning home, you can relax in the foam of antique bathtubs overlooking the park while quietly cracking the wood in the cast-iron stove. Lamps placed under the floorboards let the light glide over the walls, highlighting the textures of the brick walls and revealing contemporary history.

The ambience is comfortable, tasteful and yet rustic - it is characterized by the Kranich Museum. Here, on the upper floor, international, modern artists show their interpretations of the "crane" theme. The exhibited works change partly, the artistic flair in the manor house remains alive. Below the Crane Museum on the first floor is the romantic suite of the Crane Hotel - with a view of the historic manor park and equipped with great beds and specially tailored crane morning robes.
