European Brick Gothic

You need a little culture on your Baltic Sea holiday? The cultural landscape in the Baltic region is characterised by architectural witnesses of the Hanseatic period.

Town walls, market squares with proud gabled houses and impressive churches and monasteries in Brick Gothic style give an idea of the spirit brought by the Hanseatic period. Today, it can only be seen in the impressive ruins or individual witnesses which have been preserved.

The European Brick Gothic architecture is closely linked to the history of the northwestern and northeastern European countries between the 13th and 16th Centuries and the emergence of the Hanseatic League. The economic relations between the Baltic countries and the western European countries led to an exchange of cultural developments. The brick architecture was mainly prevalent in the coastal areas around the Baltic Sea. In the 14th Century, an opulent decorative style began to be seen on the gable ends of brick buildings. Still today, the glowing red stones bear witness to a rich and impressive architecture.

Take a trip to the historical witnesses of Brick Gothic architecture in Vorpommern and be impressed by the mix of old buildings in young surroundings!
