Kranich
Strelasund (Strela sound) and Western Pommeranian Bodden (coves). Look down and you may find some pieces of amber along the shorelines, look up and you're sure to see birds sailing in the heavenly breeze. Cranes and more cranes. The great grey birds make a stop in the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft in spring and autumn on their way to or from the south. These graceful birds are always a pleasure to watch! You can find out more about one of the largest crane resting places in central and northern Europe by visiting the Crane Information Centre in Groß Mohrdorf ( 038323 - 80 5 40). The Sweden period and the proximity to the island of Rügen heavily influence the region between the Hanseatic cities of Stralsund and Greifswald. You can go swimming at the natural sandy beach of Stahlbrode and watch the ferry cross the waters to

Seabirds, saltwater, nature and plenty of healthy living. Travel upstream or down by boat, or cycle along the banks You'll be rewarded with fascinating glimpses into the world of our feathered friends, both large and small, when you visit the bird park near the town of Marlow, located on the western side of Recknitz valley. This area is often lovingly referred to as "Little Thuringia" because of its hilly location. Spectacular woods of deciduous and pine trees crown the hills, and according to local legend you might even rescue a damsel in distress along the walking trail to the Wokerberg. The spa resort Bad Sülze is well-known for its mud and saltwater treatments, and make sure you come back in September when the Dahlia Festival is in full bloom. Don't forget to visit the Salzmuseum, which recounts the history of salt in the local region. Nature plays an important role in Recknitztal. You're sure to be enchanted by the local flora and fauna in your own discovery walks around the region.Trebeltal is an excellent place for boating activities, cycle or ride a horse through a sumptuous world of flora and fauna. Catchwords such as untouched, diverse and unspoiled only just begin to describe how magnificent nature is in this region. Landing places with excellent facilities, e.g. in Nehringen and Tribsees make your boating tour along the Trebel River just that little bit more enjoyable. The old wooden drawbridge at Nehringen marks the former border that once divided Western Pomerania and Mecklenburg.Festivals, fêtes and numerous other events take place around the year in the village Stremlow. Go and watch some of the local sporting events such as the bath tub regatta or the rubber boot throwing contest. History is lovingly retold with a good dose of humour here. The spa resort and the local animal park are the great draw cards of the town Grimmen, whose old town centre has many heritage sights worth exploring. And in the town of Tribsees don't forget to see the interior of the parish church St. Thomas dating back to the 13th century, magnificent!

The Hanseatic City of Greifswald

Tradition and innovation in a maritime atmosphere Burgher houses and lovingly restored brick gothic buildings predominate in the centre of this university town. Gabled town houses surround the market place, and charming churches reflect the maritime atmosphere of the Baltic Sea - the Hanseatic City of Greifswald. Caspar David Friedrich, the town's most famous son and Romantic painter, captured in many of his paintings the magic of the Eldena monastery ruins; the monastery was established as a Cistercian cloister in 1199 and is regarded as the cradle of Greifswald. Art and culture of the highest standard can be found all through the town. Lots of little galleries are being established around the Pommerishe Landesmuseum (Pomeranian local museum), which also has an interesting painting collection, right in the centre of town. A delight for the senses are the Jazz Evenings held in the summer at the Eldena monastery, the cultural festival Nordischer Klang (Nordic sounds) and the Bach Week. The university was established in Greifswald in 1456, and since then it has been a centre of tradition as well as a constant source of innovation. Students still shape town life. The Hanseatic City of Greifswald has become an attractive location for technology and research institutes. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, the College of Biotechnology and the Western Pomeranian Centre of Technology are just a few examples of this new development. And don't forget to visit the modern marina, the fishing village of Wieck with its wooden drawbridge and promenade reveal an interesting mixture of tradition, seafaring, trade and future-oriented innovation in the Hanseatic City of Greifswald.
