Habitat for rare & endangered species

Birds, beavers & other protected animals

Crane

Vorpommern's trademark is its unique landscape. The pristine and protected environment is the home of rare plants and animals such as the crane and white-tailed eagle.

The small Isles of Böhmke and Werder are situated in a bay in the southern part of the "Achterwasser". The two islands are seabird sanctuaries housing approx. 18.000 pairs of birds, including brown-headed and rare silver gulls, terns, lapwings and various duck species. Only a few kilometres further, the Lake Gothensee and the Thurbruch valley provide a natural habitat for many other birds. The great crested grebe, the grey goose, the crane, the wild swan and many

other rare seabirds nest here. The region around the Lake Gothensee provides food and protection for endangered species like the kingfisher, the red and the black kite and the grey heron. A small number of otters, another endangered species, can also be found here. Many migratory birds like the grey goose and the crane rest in the grasslands and acres of the Isle of Usedom and the nearby mainland.
