North-eastern Germany has a rich history going back more than 1000 years. The times of the Hanseatic League have left their mark. There are city centres with tumultuous market places which offer fruit, vegetables, flowers and crafted products. The region is also famous for its bright red brick Gothic, monumental churches and restored gable houses. The architecture of churches, castles, monasteries and city gates bears witness to the different epochs of the region's history and culture, starting from the late Gothic up to the Classical period.
Our region also offers a wide variety of local history museums, music, theatre and exhibitions that bring to life the history and culture of this part of Germany. Music festivals, medieval events and theatre performances attract both locals and visitors throughout the year. Besides, the Hanseatic cities of Stralsund, Greifswald and others are shows of architecture, history and culture in themselves.
Harbour atmosphere and fishermen's tradition - in Wieck near Greifswald and in the little seaport Ueckermünde at the lagoon of Szczecin, the maritime atmosphere surrounds the region. Grabbing a fish sandwich fresh from the cutter or enjoying an elaborate fish dish in a restaurant - the proximity to the sea influences cooking and gastronomy.
