Discover the healing effect of chalk

Chalk Cliffs of Rügen

The Isle of Rügen is well-known for its fine sand, its beautiful beaches and the blue sea. Pristine nature, picturesque scenery and protected nature reserves make the Isle of Rügen a popular destination. A special feature of Germany's largest island are its famous chalk cliffs.

The resources of the island are used for a large variety of wellness facilities. The Isle of Rügen is the largest chalk mining area in Germany. Only a few years ago, the chalk was rediscovered as a mild natural cure and is now predominantly used for medical and cosmetic purposes.

This type of chalk is characterised by a very small iron content and a high fineness. As powder it is used for papescent mud baths or packages. Chalk has been used for medical purposes on the Isle of Rügen for almost 80 years now. The chalk clears the pores of the skin and is, in addition, particularly suited for thermal treatment. Its favourable particle size distribution and its high silt level help cleaning the skin. The medical chalk is white and odourless and the creamy pasty chalk mash feels really soft. 2000 years ago, in Roman spas, marble dust was already added to the bath water. The healing effect of the crystalline granular limestone had been recognised then. Chalk proved to be a great affordable substitute because its chemical composition is similar to that of marble. The first chalk baths began to develop in 1910 in the seaside resort Sassnitz. Today, the chalk of Rügen is used primarily in medicine and in wellness & beauty institutions. Chalk baths or packages assist in the treatment of rheumatic diseases, synovitis, arthrosis, neuralgia and skin diseases.
