CONCEPTION
Neringa - is a settlement of recreation, but moreover it is a national park, which has
injuring nature. That is why it is very important, developing the city, to reconcile these
two directions.
THE SUNDIAL
Project by architect: Riæardas Kriötapaviæius
Astronomical calculations by: Ribertas Klimka
Sculptor: Klaudijus Púdymas
The height of obelisk - 13.8m, weight - 200t.
Neringa is the only place in Lithuania with the absolute mathematical horizon where the
sun sets and rises from the water surface. That is why in 1984 an idea of constructing a
sundial at the survey site of Parnidûio dune, occured . In 1986 '' the hand '' of the sundial
was ordered in the department of Vyborg Karjerai and in 1990 it was brought to Nida and
was constructed on the Parnidis dune in 1995. 2 meters of ''the hand'' is hid under the
ground while 12 meters of it stretched into the sky. At the end of 1995 the obelisk was
engraved with the symbols of calendar holidays as copied from the wooden runes calendars
of the 17th century which are kept in the national museum of Lithuania in Vilnius. Up to now
the site, which is intended to be the dial of the sundial-calendar, isn't put in order, According
to the project, the bigger part of this site should be flagged by granite flags making stages of
different height . There would be 16 stages - one for every month and with the zones of solstices
and even days. Having a fully constructed sundial, we will have a view of the calendar of the
whole fear in front of us, which will be concentrated on the top of the dune of the 30m diameter.
On even days and during solstices , at sunset, when looking from the obelisk, the sun will hide
behind little sculpture figures symbolizing this time of the year.
540 00Lt. are needed to finish the construction.
